A IS FOR AWESOME #2

Last Year, the rain poured, the cars slid and the cold reached my bones. But I got there. Where? astore and we-are-awesome threw what they called, A is for Awesome, a party for Cape Town's scenesters. Even though the weather placed something of a dampener on proceedings, the place was packed out. Check out pics from last year's event - a is for awesome.

This year, things have escalated somewhat.
ADIDAS ObyO are on board to ensure a wicked cool African beat fest.

The lineup includes:

- Gazelle (Live)

- Desmond and the Tutu's (DJ Set - Shane Durrant)

- Haasbroek

- We-Are-Awesome DJ's (Andrew and Sean)

- Radio Elite

Party of 2k9? I don't know, but I reckon it's going to be pretty epic by Cape Town's standards.

When: 20 November 2009

Address: Tafelberg Tavern, 105 Hope Street, Cape Town

More info on Facebook.

Disco crazy!!

Early on in the night, Assembly djs made their intentions clear. Heavy electro was served to all. Justice, Digitalism, Presets and even a Boys Noise remix (Feist - My Moon My Man) made up a good portion of beats thrown down. Dance moves were so outrageous, that at one stage, my beverage was shoulder-barged by a little lady into my mouth chipping my front tooth. This came a week after I wrote off my car. Fun fun.
Check Berry advertising his own company. You go boy. If that girl is who I think it is, she should totally be getting a salary from WAA for all the features she has appeared in for the lads. Either that, or, should she become a model, WAA should get shares in her profits for all the PR they have done for her over the years. WAA could totally start a modelling agency. Excuse the verbal diarrhea. If you missed my pre discotheque download tune, click here.

Marriage Material of the Week Part #3

It's been a long time coming, but it's finally here. I still have people coming up to me and talking to me about Marriage Material of the Week Part #1. I have heard things like, "I went to school with that girl." "She is at my university." Fun stuff. Apparently, she is just like I described her. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Due to my lack of continuity, I have had a lot of 'potential material' to sift through for this edition. It seems as though I am favouring blond girls currently. Sorry about that. I will make a special effort for the next episode, if possible.

This girl is quality. How do I know? Well, off the bat she is clearly competing for the affections of this unnamed celebrity look alike. Competition is good. Competition builds character.

Her smile is genuine and heart felt, not sleezy or cheap. She looks young, but not the annoying type of young. She looks mature enough to be able to have a conversation without her concentration wanning.

The beer is a let down, but I am going to give her the benefit of the doubt, and assume she is merely holding the beverage of choice for the celebrity.

NYPC - Cape Town - 10 July 2009

So, the New Young Pony Club are amazing live. This is according to Sean from we-are-awesome.com (or weareawesome.com in the latest GQ). "Best band I have EVER seen!" His words.

It's not the full band/group/contingent. Lou Hayter typically responsible for keys is playing a DJ set at Assembly on the night. Nevertheless, this is possibly the biggest thing that has ever happened to the club music scene in Cape Town!

Vice can give you what you want! Vice can make your heart beat short. Vice Magazine is coming to Cape Town. This very exciting publication is released (with different content) all over the world and is responsible for bringing Lou to our shores.

In addition to Lou, you can expect to see the likes of:
Ashtray Electric

Haezer
Inge Beckmann (formerly of Lark)
Ree-Burth (Soweto Rock)
DJ Lapse

If you want tickets to this historic Vice Launch, click along to we are awesome, or email blaise at info@theassembly.co.za.

Dear Rom's Swan Song

On Tuesday night Dear John Love Emma played a full full show at Waiting Room. It was cosey. There was no where to sit. Between songs they seemed a little confused as to what to do, looking at one another self-consciously, as if to whisper, 'which song is next?' 'What do we do now?' But once that was decided and the music began again, it was lovely. The set ended a little too soon for my liking, and others attending. Emma was forced to sing another one, the "water rushing" song.
Ludwig is the best band member. FACT! His violin skills are magical and he rocks out.It was also Rom's last show. It was sad to have to say goodbye to him. Let's hope he comes back one day and plays again.Who is this girl? The girl on the left? I met her at The Waiting Room. I thought she was fun.

I Heart New Magazines

The last few days I have been reading a new magazine, called Voice Magazine. They have just released the Pilot Issue. A very interesting concept. Unlike publications such as Chew, you read the entire magazine online.

This issue features a number of locals.
Johnny Neon (muso)
Jadan McCulough (New Loud Rockets)
Blaise Janichon (Assembly Manager)
Gabi-Lee Smit (model)
Sean Sassen and Andrew Berry (we-are-awesome kids)
Bevan Davis (photographer)

Oh, and many more interesting articles and pictures. The we-are-awesome article was most interesting.

There are also a few interesting music videos, most of which we've seen by now.

Check it out.

I was a Dancer all along

With the economic uncertainties of the last couple of weeks people have had to tighten their ‘going out belts’ and pick very selectively which parties to attend. This weekend was a good example of that.

The venue was Mercury, the party was Dance Lessons. The well advertised event featured the big draw card in Unit.R. They went on at about 11.30 and played (for me) the worst set I have ever seen them play! They were boring and unprofessional. I feel the freedom to say that, because I have heard them on a number of occasions when they have made me dance and get my sweat on. Other than that, the evening showcased outstanding acts from djs Tommy Gun and Dario (Fiction residents).

True to their promises, the ladies from Prom Night delivered. With streamers from the ceiling and quality djs churning out sweet melodies, a night like this could not be found elsewhere in Cape Town. For the small crowd that assembled for the evening it was a blast. We danced stupidly while wearing or using some of hundreds of ribbons that were made for the event. The goodness Cupcakes also provided a very necessary sugar high to help people let loose.

It is trusted as the word spreads about the awesomeness and uniqueness of this party and as the economy stables, more people will flock to this event to share cake and show off some unique tackie squeaking.

To find out when the next party will be, join the Facebook group called Prom Night and be the first to get info about proceedings.

[The attention to detail did not go unnoticed]

AN ASIDE: I cannot pinpoint the last time I went to Mercury, but the place is looking so much better. Gone are the days when I can’t tell what the floor is made of. They have transformed the hole into something cleaner and presentable.

Industry Hair

How many bad hair styles are there in the music industry. It seems as though people are trying to make a statement with their hair. We all remember when good ol' Britney went mad and shaved her head. She then tried to cover it up with braids.
So Nasty!
How about American rockers, Leeland? This pic is their current pic on Last.fm.
So naff! Worst hair [centre guy] and worst beard [second from right]??
Don't get me wrong, these guys are awesome musicians with thought provoking lyrics. Maybe a little pop-like for my taste, but very good.

If we bring it closer to home, how about Davy Huson's half peroxide half roots hairstyle from a few months back?
Is he going to look back in 20 years (or less) and question what he did to himself? You know these kids are going to hate themselves when they grow up.
[above two pics from WAA]

It's interesting how one thing that is so accepted and even loved at one stage can be so hated and despised even just a year later. Remember the mullet? I loved my mullet. Now, I wouldn't be caught dead with a mullet. I have a friend who used to sport the mullhawk. That is a mullet and a mohawk on one head of hair. Special times.I think Andrew still has a mullet though?
I nearly had the opportunity to shave his head. We had a bet. Neither of us won. Sad.
Bonus Mullet photo.

Do Alternative Celebs like the attention?

[Pic from WAA]
Celebrities that go out in public to the places we go, are they looking for attention? Do they enjoy getting photos taken of them with strangers? Or do they just put up with it (those who do) because fans are fickle and might turn on them if they do not oblige? Would they prefer to be like everyone else and not noticed because they play in a kinda big deal band or act in high profile movies? Jared Leto seems to be the "put up with it" kinda guy. Jeremy (Dirty Skirts front man) seems to be stoked with the attention on stage, but once the shows over, it is over, leave him alone. No photos please. But then is Jeremy a real celebrity? At what stage are you regarded as a celebrity? Are the New Loud Rockets celebrities? And Nigel Moore?

Friday Night Fever

The whose-who of Cape Town came out to play on Friday night at The Assembly, for a spectacular evening of music and good company. On arrival all females received a Reebok shoe key ring, a great touch to the party.

Dj Low kicked off the night with a brilliant set of mixed music genres, ranging from reggae to a Desmond and the Tutus remix. People started hitting the floor, and began to warm up for The Beams.

Fifteen minutes before the performance, the dance floor could not be seen. Bodies were squeezed together like sardines to watch The Beams. As per-usual, Paul’s dancing either gets you going or makes you laugh, but either way you have a good time. Shake Shake, baby. Faces were seen bobbing up and down as girls mounted their boyfriends....shoulders. Epileptic looking dance moves became the norm and pretense was thrown to the wind as the party heated up.

The progress from the band is amazing. From an almost shy stage presence (Paul excluded) to flamboyant extroversion from the guitarist and bassist, The Beams are definitely extending their rays. Let us not forget that these guys also like to party, as Paul took a short vomit break between songs, turned around looked up at the crowd, smiled and sayed “all better now!” The party went on.

Gazelle: What an unusual bunch of guys. The outfits on stage were indie-come-african-tribe. The performance was better than the usual and this could be credited to the live band that accompanied them. The performance was an African theme and sound was a fresh blend of Dub, electro-synth mixed with Johnny Clegg. A unique experiment that they credit to the African Renaissance, “African Chic”. These guys have a colourful presence that mixes Africa with the West, merging cultures and creating a great mood for the dance. They guys rock. Proudly (South) African. The band is made up of Xander Ferreira and Nick Matthews (Coda and the Iridium project). As they say “The focus is to create authentic Afrikan Elektronik Dance Musik.” And they want to begin the process in Cape Town, the Mother city of creation.

Sibot, an old favourite of the scene, closed off the night and played some of his golden oldie Real Estate Agent stuff and some new things. So the young and old could relate to everything. For those who came for the djs a chill out section in Assembly was the way for them. With foosball tables and arcade computer games that take you back to your childhood.

Nothing was lacking on Friday night.

P is for Posers

The partnership of A is for Awesome was launched on Friday at the Reception. Despite the turbulent, stormy weather, Cape Town music and fashion lovers were out in numbers to support this new and very original endeavor.
Traditionally a clothing boutique, astore and party pics celebs we-are-awesome came together a while back with the idea of bringing Cape Town something new. And new it was. As opposed to the usual only indie kids party, there were strange cats from all over. Some old, some young, some jock, some queer, some indie and some specialties.
With Dario (astore) making music and Andrew and Sean (we-are-awesome) taking photos, it could mean only one thing, massive dance moves and bigger poses. And goodness, were there poses. A very good start to a potentially huge partnership. Sources tell me, they are already planning number 2 and 3. Look out for it Cape Town. It is not to be missed.

A is for Awesome

This Friday, the party pix boys from We Are Awesome team up with clothing specialists astore to put forward A is for Awesome. This party promises to be a monstrous night out.

One of the novel features at this party is the use of the pre party request playlist. If there is a song that would make your night, you can mail the organisers and let them know what it is. Pretty sick.

Be sure not to miss this, the launch of the astore and We Are Awesome party combo, this Friday (29 August) at Reception (129-131 Hatfield Street). Doors open at 9pm so be there early so we can get the party started.

For more information and the Facebook invite, click along to the event's page. Also, check out the new fan page.

See you there Cape Town...
