WINNERS: Kidofdoom tickets and new album!

Two people have just won themselves a pair of tickets to see Kidofdoom and a copy of the new album, My Faith In War.

I had so very many great requests with all very valid reasons why they (the people who entered) deserved the tickets. I couldn’t pick. So I moseyed over to random.org and entered in all of your wonderful names and decided that once I click ‘RANDOMIZE’, I would pick the top two of the randomized list as my winners. So congratulations Mr x and Ms y!

You didn’t think I would really be silly enough to put their names up just yet? They will be emailed shortly to confirm their victory! Be sure to check to avoid disappointment!

    Well done.

If you are unfamiliar with this competition, click here to see what you missed out on.

Get down to the Klein Libertas tonight to support one of South Africa's very best acts as well as Friday to see them at Mercury.

Win tickets to Kidofdoom in Cape Town!

So next week Kidofdoom come to Cape Town to play two shows to launch their new album, My Faith In War. The first (30 September) will be at the Klein Libertas, Stellenbosch. The second will be in the Mother City (2 October) at Mercury Live. I am expecting it to be HUUUUGE! But I don't think Kidofdoom know any other way to do shows??

The most exciting addition to their Cape Town shows has to be Sassquatch, known for his sick imagery and effects for Kidofdoom, Ben Rausch also has the knack of reproducing tracks from electro artists (and artists from other genres) in a fluid mix of busting beats. Haezer will also be playing.

So why all the info? Well, I am giving away two sets of double tickets plus two copies of the new album! Pretty sweet! What do you have to do to get two tickets and an album? Furnish me with an email containing the following:

    Your Name:
    Your preferred venue (Klein Libertas/Mercury):
    Favourite Kidofdoom song:
Why I should give you the prizes:

Email me on richardcoleking[at]gmail[dot]com with the details. You can email me now.

Women of the Industry: PJ Harvey

I had a few requests for the very interesting (and quite old which maybe makes her a perfect candidate as a pioneer of 'the industry') PJ Harvey.
She was born in October 1969 in England on a small sheep farm to a dad who was a sculptor (and stonemason). She cites her first musical influences as being blues, jazz and 'art-rock', a more experimental style of rock music. More recently she enjoys influences in Russian folk music and Italian composer, Ennio Morricone among others.
Since her first album in 1991, she has won numerous awards including a Mercury Music Prize and Rolling Stone's Best New Artist and Best Songwriter in 1992 and Best Artist of 1995. Two of her albums have also been placed on the Rolling Stones 500 Best Albums of All Time. These were To Bring You My Love and Rid of Me.
For some captivating music by this weathered trailblazer check out a couple of articles and tracks on The Hype Machine and of course her Myspace:

    Dave Matthews on racism

DMB have a new album out that they have dedicated to their late great saxophonist, LeRoi Moor. Dave met with a reporter from CNN and spoke a little about his perceptions on racism in a 'free' country. It's quite an interesting and unique view.

    Women of the Industry: Feist

I got a request for a Women of Industry post on Leslie Feist. Leslie Feist is another Canadian artist I love and respect. She grew up in an arty family and spent some of her childhood in a town called Sackville. Awesome name. She got serious with her music when she was 15 as part of a punk outfit, Placebo, no not that Placebo. They got to play with the Ramones, (yes that Ramones) when they won a battle of the bands contest. Ahh, remember battle of the bands. [Flip I miss band battles. There were (and still are) some truly terrible bands in CT.]
After fiddling with other bands playing bass and guitar, she went solo producing a number of awesome albums - Let it Die, Open Season and The Reminder. She also recorded Monarch, but that was in the late 90's. I can't decide which I prefer - Let it Die or The Reminder.
Her track, 1234 is one of my favourites and she owes her inspiration for that music video to her involvement in the Olympics where she was a dancer many moons ago (1988). Have a listen to a Vanshe/Technologic remix of 1234 below.

If you know of any women in particular who should be in this series, give me a hollar!

Eat this Horse - Handbag Mind

So, we are all rather excited to welcome Eat This, Horse back. I have been listening to them quite a lot over the last day or so, I am quite excited to see them perform, with all the same band members I might add!
If you have caught something of this very exciting news but are still in the dark as to what people are talking about and wondering why they seem to pause in the middle of the name, listen to the track below, a now-golden-oldie. As for the pause, the name is Eat This (comma) Horse.
I will chat to John in the next day or so and get some more information for ya'll! Yes, the same John from Dear John Love Emma.

    Eat This, Horse are back

So after 200 odd years of recording and garden cricket (I have it under good authority that they engaged in the sport frequently when they were supposed to be practicing), Eat This, Horse are back!! When I was fresh out of high school, these guys were one of the most sort after live acts around. No kidding, they were like Rabbit from my parents era.
So, now they are back to support Sticky Antlers on their Cape Tour stop at The Assembly.

Women of the Industry: The Corrs

Kidding, I would never do a post on The Corrs. That would be silly.

    Metric: Sick Muse

Metric had a video contest for Sick Muse. Words from the winner: "This is a sad story about an Anti Cupid stealing souls to people around the world in different situations, and after that the lost souls dance to the beat. We are from Venezuela and I love Metric, and I did this"

    Really clever.

    Women of the Industry: Metric

Metric, the AWESOME Candadian indie/rock outfit released Fantasies in April this year, the much anticipated LP. But this post is not so much about that as it is about Emily Haines.
Although living in a world arguably created for men and having band members made up of men, the leading lady is certainly not out of her depth. Her contributions to the band include vocals, synth and guitar.

Emily also has musical interests outside of Metric and is part of endeavours such as, Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton and Broken Social Scene which has about 1000 band members.

Check out, Women of the Industry: A Fine Frenzy

Also, a Metric song from Fantasies.

Kidofdoom hit the road with 'My Faith in War'

So, by now you will be aware of the imminent launch of the new Kidofdoom album, My Faith in War. I received a press release that read:

"In OCTOBER 2009 the band are independently releasing their 15 track album ‘My Faith in War’, a concept album which is a 60minute long sound-scape of the bands’ interpretation of the Apocalypse and the hope of life thereafter, recorded at B# Studios and produced by Kidofdoom and PH van Pletzen from Yesterday’s Pupil. ‘My Faith in War’ features guest artists Mathieu Auriacombe and Yesterday’s Pupil as well as Kidofdooms’ two off stage band members, Peter Rodda (Lighting Designer) and Ben Rausch (visuals) who can be seen in the album art. This album is testimony to Kidofdoom’s maturation as a band with much higher levels of production and complex compositions with a distinct move towards electronic music production intertwined with traditional post rock elements. Surging string arrangements, dramatized melodic synth structures with Kidofdoom’s fundamental rhythm section sound that provides the ‘dance’ element to their music. This album is not just a collection of songs carefully pieced together, it is a story with a beginning, middle and an end and must be listened to in its entirety to truly grasp its full effect."

So now you know. What you might be unaware of, is that, starting at the end of the month, Kidofdoom are embarking on a tour of the Nation. Most notably for us (Cape Townians), there will be two shows in the Cape Town area, The Klein Libertas and Mercury Live. The dates for the whole tour are as follows:

The launch dates are as follows:

30th Septemeber – Klein Libertas Theatre, Stellenbosch

With Haezer and Sassquatch - R40

With Haezer and Sassquatch - R40

    03rd October – Tings n Times, Pretoria

    9th October – Big Gig #2 – Durban

With Sassquatch, City Bowl Mizers and guests. - R50 (R30 with Student Card)

My Bad - The Muse thing

So, last night, I posted a link to a site sharing with the world, Muse's new album, The Resistance. I was under the impression it was legit. I have received a couple of friendly warnings that it's not, and so I apologise for coming across as promoting piracy. Andries was rightly angry. Please understand that I was not in the know. I would never EVER promote piracy on my blog, please believe me! I post download music that I get from respected blogs or (my personal favourite) straight from the artists. Otherwise, for sampling purposes.

Sorry, AGAIN. Why does music have to take SO SO long to get here? I will purchase it as soon as it hits the South African shelves.

    Can we move on??

    Muse - The Resistance

So, I am busy downloading Muse's new album, The Resistance. I cannot wait for it to be done. I have listened to the tracks, Uprising (awesome) and United States of Eurasia (a little weird).

Oh, so the download, it's...........(wait for it)..........................absolutely.........................(wait for it)..........................................absolutely FREE!!

The reason? I read this and it shed a little light:

    Hello,
Muse’s new album (The Resistance), leaked earlier today due to early-sale errors made at music stores in Melbourne and Paris.

As a result it is freely available from museresistance.com. Check it out and don't miss out. Who knows how long the download link will be available!!

Taxi Violence - Devil 'n Pistol (Music Video)

I got hold of the new Taxi Violence video. I was impressed with the opening sequences, you know well constructed, interesting them, not low budget, yada yada yada. And then it just got twisted. I guess I should have seen it coming, what with the title of the track being, Devil 'n Pistol. Anyway, once I got over being freaked out, I saw the clever creative side of the African-American bar theme with a band playing and the odd well known face.

Was anyone else as disturbed by this video as I was? Or am I just overreacting?

Desmond pics from __& The__ Album Launch

Anthony Lee Martin is one of the characters who won Desmond & The Tutus tickets for the __& The__ show at Mercury. In exchange, he promised to take photos of the band and send them to me. He came through, albeit 10 odd days later. Worth the wait, I think. Enjoy.

Women of the Industry: A Fine Frenzy

I stumbled across A Fine Frenzy, this great female singer in the States. Her real name is Alison Sudol she released her first album in 2007, One Cell in the Sea. Her latest album is A Bomb in a Birdcage and was released in Germany on 28 August 2009, while the American release is today, 8 September 2009.

I haven’t been fortuned the listening pleasure of the entire album, but the one track I listened to, I loved to the point that I thought her bloggable. She has also inspired a new series on Smack Talk. We all know how long these series’ last on here, but lets give it a whirl. I am titling the series, Women of the Industry. Clearly, she is first.

Here is a track List for A Bomb in a Birdcage:

    1. What I Wouldn't Do

    2. New Heights

    3. Electric Twist

    4. Blow Away

    5. Happier

    6. Swan Song

    7. Elements

    8. The World Without

    9. Bird of the Summer

    10. Stood Up

    11. The Beacon

    12. Silent War

Feel free to download one of the songs from the album:

Arctic Monkeys - Humbug album thoughts

Arctic Monkeys have recently released another album, Humbug. It is very cool. I have a few blog bffs who have reviewed the album already. I have abstained from reading their perceptions on account of not wanting to be swayed on my initial personal judgment of the album.

First thoughts: different, but great. There are sounds that blend 'typical' Arctic Monkeys music with that of The Shadow Puppets debut venture (which was a huge success by the way).

Their songs are still full of clever lyrics compiled with Alex Turner's genius insight into word usage. But there is somewhat less to jump around to in this album. Many of the tracks are in between lose-yourself-with-your-crazy-dancing-shoes and drift-into-505-mode. While you are encouraged to bob your head and tap your big toe, you are not inspired to get your sweat on with a crazy German audience (like I did in 07 to Favourite Worst Nightmare).

I think if give it a chance, you are bound to 'dig it'!

    Track listing:
    1. "My Propeller"
    2. "Crying Lightning"
    3. "Dangerous Animals"
    4. "Secret Door"
    5. "Potion Approaching"
    6. "Fire and the Thud"
    7. "Cornerstone"
    8. "Dance Little Liar"
    9. "Pretty Visitors"
    10. "The Jeweller's Hands"

I am going to read these reviews now:

    Desmond's show @Mercury

Shane and his team played one of the greatest shows it is safe to say that Mercury has ever seen. Being the end of the month, a full house was only expected. And that they got.

After some beats from Ty, the Tutus took the stage. Shane started with a track off the new EP, it was great. They proceeded to play tracks that are mostly considered as singalongs from their last album. From the pic above, it's safe to say, The German Modern was a big hit.

I could ramble on about how great they were, but it wouldn't be the first time. I did however have one complaint that I shared with Shane post show; they didn't play New Disaster from __& The__.

Free tracks are still available from my music library. Check them out if you haven't already.
