Fokof Movie - "forgive them for they know not what they do"

Fokofpolisiekar are almost done with their "Fokumentary" (after 2 and a half years), "forgive them for they know not what they do". From this short trailer, you get a sense that something awesome is going to happen in the feature length edition. The cinematography in the short is out of this world (in my opinion).

The first screening of this film will be at the
Encounters Film Festival 2009 in Cape Town between the 2-19 July. Kinda rough dates, I am sure they will be narrowed closer to the time. Even Blaise Janichon (or Bladsye as Franci calls him) makes an appearance . Enjoy...

FokofSlashKLT

Ek kan nie Afrikaans praat nie. Ek kan nie Afrikaans verstaan nie. Maar ek het Stellenbos toe gegaan om vir Fokof te gaan kyk. (I had to get a friend to help me with that last sentence.) It was my second time in Stellenbosch in a week, record breaking stuff really.

It was crazy. Cape Town does not compare in any way to Stellies. Heads and shoulders were but stepping stones for Franci as he pranced around on what I thought was the stage. He may be small, but he is a god in those parts. I understood nothing!

The open air KLT was very well attended on Wednesday night with an estimated 1400 people! This was no thanks at all to an act that looks like something out of the 80’s, Slashdogs. The name does nothing for them either. The lead singer looks like Xmen’s Wolverine in 30 years time. Generally it would be considered a compliment for a man to be compared to Hugh Jackman, but he looked and sounded awful. I think the crowd were a little unsure of how to react to the travesty.

They finally finished and it took 20min to get a drink. Then Francois came on, and the fun began in a real way. I felt like the only one there who knew one Fokof song. And, as is Polisiekar tradition, I had to wait till the last song of the set to hear it. “Fokof, Fokofpolisiekar, Fokof!” Fun. I even prided myself on listening to and learning the lyrics for a Van Coke song, thinking it was a Fokof song. The ignorance I am bleeding on this post is making me faint.

Anyway, kids in Stellenbosch don’t dance like the typical Cape Town indie kids, it’s a completely different scene! The more fighting and moshing during a set, the better a show is!! If you get your shirt ripped and get to pinch Francois’ belly, you feel like you have found salvation and getting hit on the head by a flying, empty Tassenberg or Black Label bottle is par for the course. It was super entertaining.

After the show, once the dust had settled and people had picked themselves up, a 6 year old child could be seen coiling cables on stage. A nice touch to a BIG evening out in Stellenbosch.

I still only know and understand one of their songs, or to be more specific, the chorus.

Pics will follow soon I hope.

Taxi Violence, Francois and Inge collaborate

On Saturday, Taxi Violence performed at Marshall Music in Cape Town with guest performers Francois from Polisiekar and Inge from Lark.
The weird thing about the show was that is was in the morning, about 11am. The event was to celebrate LMG's birthday. LMG is a music magazine in Cape Town.
Hearing George and Inge perform was certainly a highlight for the 25 people that had gathered for the show. Francois was still pretty under the weather from whatever he had been up to until the wee hours of the morning. Fun times.
After the show I had a chat with Francois. He is very handsy, and does not like blogs, maybe thanks to a word or two from good old Luca.
Fun morning but it was sad that so few people turned up for the show.
Yours in musical......kidding.

RTD

So this weekend is a pretty huge one on the music calender. Rocking the Daisies is going down and is going to be monstrous. This is an opportunity to go and listen to your favourite SA bands and no doubt meet some interesting characters. You get to camp in the nature and rough it for the weekend. This is well worth the cash, which is isn't that much considering what you get. You will get to see bands like New Loud Rockets, The Dirty Skirts, Fire through the Window, AKing, Fokof and so many more. For more info and tickets hop along to the website. Who knows, maybe you will get to meet Eagle Eye Cherry? Haha. I totally wish I could go, but unfortunately, I have exams starting this week.

Get there!! I am already regretting not going.

A weekend in the city

For the first time in a while, Cape Townians are truly spoilt for choice this weekend. Tonight features an all Pretoria lineup at The Assembly with the familiar heroes whose lyricless melodies speak louder than any words could, KidofDoom. They are joined by DJ Sassquatch (one of the organisers of Sovereign Academy parties we were treated to one of earlier in the year), Yesterday's Pupil and Isochronous. Click here for the event page. Also Cat String Theory and Kings of Vegas are playing at Mercury Live tonight.

Saturday night features an interestingly diverse selection of music. Cape Town is simply bound to fancy at least one party. At The Assembly, Fokofpolisiekar of the Northern Suburbs are playing for those who are that way inclined. For those more into House/electro/rave, the now long standing party of Arcade is happening at, dare I say it, the Bang Bang Club. Then, my personal favourite, Dear John Love Emma are launching into the whole performance thing with their very first public appearance at the Waiting Room after which they will also all be dj'ing. For more info on Dear John Love Emma click here.

Too much for one weekend? That's what I thought.

But wait there is more. Tuesday, the day before the oh-so-welcome public holiday, The Arrows are playing with King of Town, Lapse and Magnum Hi-Fi at The Assembly. Click here for the event page. Similtaneously, Fiction is going off with Going Steady, Lapse, Tommy Gun and HAASBROEK (Mystic Boer). The event is called Untamed Youth.

Do it.

The Cape Town Leg of the TRL Tour

The windy Mother city was the start of the TRL radio tour, with The Dirty Skirts opening to a quarter capacity crowd. An absolute disaster! Or so I thought to myself as I chewed mercilessly on my gum. But if the Skirts, as they are referred to by their adoring fans, were put out by playing to a small crowd, they didn’t show it. There Jet/Killers/Bloc Party mix of sounds were played with high energy, high tempo and was fast setting a high standard for the other acts of the night. As darkness fell so the crowds grew and the cheap booze flowed as it can only flow at a RAG party. By the end of the Skirts set a good part of the Old Mill was full.

During the intervals people spread out under the stars braving the windy elements for a change of scenery or just some fresh air. The vibe was comfortable, and there was an air of expectancy for what was to come.

Fokof’s HUGE Northern suburbs following seemed to be out in force as the band burst on stage almost all in black and with the agenda quite clear. MAYHEM!! The crowd had new vigour. There was mass moshing. Fans screamed the aggressive Afrikaans lyrics back at the “we’ll take it all” band.

Then it was time for the rose to enter the thorny den. Welcome Inge and her finely tuned boys that make up the highly original Lark. Inge, the only female to take the stage as a band member the whole evening, expressed a little concern to me back stage about not having had a sound check. Had she not mentioned it, one would never have known. She gracefully captures everyone with her powerful voice and her band’s musical genius. On occasions, Lark loop Inge’s voice and she harmonises with her looped melody, quite amazing!

Then it was time to get down and dancing house style as Goldfish spun the decks, played their sax, and pulled on their double bass. They adapted well from what they must be used to, playing every Sunday for the beautiful people of Camps Bay in a club that plays very little other than House and Hip-hop.

The kick off to the TRL radio tour was a huge success. The evening offered something for everyone. From Indie, to classic rock and even House. No one felt left out. The crowds had the “only in Cape Town” two type of people bill. We had our jocks with their upturned collars and bootleg jeans and our Indie kids with skinnies and Chuck Taylors. You gotta love Cape Town.

The rest of the tour promises to be a huge success as they move on now to Joburg and Pretoria where International act OkGo! will be joining the fun and no doubt learning a lot from our local talent!

See you around Cape Town
