Violence, Anger, Wrath!

So, I went to town last night with the thought of going to Mercury for the Taxi Violence acoustic show where they were filming a DVD. I arrived at about 21h30 and met up with Dave, Steve and John at Shak. We had a drink before going across to the show (one door down). At 22h05 we arrived at Mercury. The bouncer would not let us in. I told him I was on the list, but he said it didn't matter. Apparently, because they had been playing for 5 minutes the doors were closed. RI(effing)DICULOUS!! I was livered. So livered.

Have you ever been turned away from a gig because you are late for the show (even if you are on the guestlist)? What do the band think about the guys at the front turning away patrons?

Who do I blame? The band? The organisers? The bouncers?

But we went dancing later in the evening and it was fun. Rad.

Taxi Violence at Mercury

Taxi Violence are going "big" with someone quite special. They are using Friday night's show to shoot an acoustic DVD, something I don't think enough bands consider. I am super excited about this one. Big up to the guys. Come along to support.

CD Review: SIBOT AND SPOEK ARE

SIBOT AND SPOEK ARE is the name of the debut project put together by (funny enough [sarcastically]) Sibot and Spoek under the team name, Playdoe. They have only played two shows here in South Africa but had performed in Europe before these shows. Seems like a backwards way of doing it, but as far as I am concerned there is no right or wrong way. Just different ways. No one formula can be prescribed for all in the industry. I am digressing, so let me continue.

Playdoe's Afro/Hiphop/electro/90's rap EP is but a taste, a big taste of the spectacle that is their live show. This extended play features amongst others their catchy single, Pop Like This and for me their biggest song, It's That Beat of which the original and Toxic Avenger Remix is included. Listen to the remix below.

From the show I went to I realised they had far too much material for just one EP. Simon says they'll be "dropping an other EP locally in Feb ish and hopefully an album overseas".

There has been a lot of interest in Playdoe from record companies like Big Dada, Ninja and XL, so lets get behind the guys and see them succeed!

Here is the track list for SIBOT AND SPOEK ARE:

It's that beat
Fish Gut
Neolectro Afrobotic
Gravy Yard
Pop Like This
Metro
It's That Beat (Toxic Avenger Remix)

For more music from Playdoe check out their space and their fan page.

Do it!

Zebra & Giraffe at Kirstenbosch

Well well well. Zebra & Giraffe is the name on the lips of most South African music lovers at the moment. And why not? They have been playing together for 3 months or so and have played to more people than some bands have who have been playing for over a year. Yesterday marked their biggest show to date! There were reports of just under 4000 people gathered in the shelter of Table Mountain to witness the fitness.

Flashy guitarist, Alan, introed many songs with energy stimulating riffs and Greg had to put up with more fans screaming their affections for the overnight rockstar. Darren on drums was fashioning another waistcoat (he loves his waistcoats) and from the last time I saw them at The Assembly, bassist, backup vocals and other stuff, Andrew, has cleaned up his act with a shave and haircut. (I think he's had a haircut. He certainly still has the mullet.) I don't have anything to say about Rob on keys, but he was there. Good job Rob!

Unfortunately, the sound check was not quite complete by the time the lads came on stage and so they were forced to do a little mixing during the show. Subtle, but noticed. Andrew's vocals were adjusted to be backing rather than as loud as Greg's. It was necessary. But the average music listener may not have noticed. I happened to be sitting with two of the biggest music scrutinizers in the industry (James and Tim), and so it was clear to them and therefore us.

The sitting vibe at Kirstenbosch works...for most bands. But it wasn't long before the school kids had gathered with their cellphones to photograph and dance up front. It was novel for kids because it is rare that bands of the Z&G caliber play to all ages live. And so the generally uniformed kids had whipped out their newest item of casual wear for the special event.

Z&G played a new song, it was good. Then they finished their set. Or did they? I was reminded at that stage that they had not played their other big single, Arm Yourself. It had to be played. They could not be finished until they had played that song. And so they came back on stage lead by Darren. The words, Arm yourself my love!! wrung out into the early evening air that had turned a tad crisp as the sun disappeared behind the gathered clouds and looming mountain.

It was a super start to the summer concerts and a stunning way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Zebra & Giraffe will be back for their forth Cape Town show on 16 December, so if you have missed them up until now, make sure you are around then! They will be playing at The Assembly.

See you there Cape Town...

The Members, #6: Arjuna Kohlstock

Next up on in our Member's series is the latest addition to The Plastics, Arjun. No, he's not Indian. The Plastics decided to become a "real band" by adopting another member to their ranks. Read below and get to know a little about the last quarter.

  1. How did you come to be apart of The Plastics? And, how does it feel being apart of a band that seems to be going places?

I have been really good friends with Sasha and Pascal (drummer and vocalist) since the year 2000 as we used to gig together at the Purple Turtle and other seedy clubs in our respective punk bands ie. Hoax and War On Salt . Since then we have remained tight and share the same love for music and partying. I first got to know Karl (bassist) on “The Joint Tour,” which consisted of The Plastics and my previous band, The Allstar Funk Four, touring a couple of venues down the West Coast. When Allstar broke up I went to work in Australia for a couple of months. Before I left there was talk of me joining The Plastics when I get back. The guys said they would “wait for me,” it was quite romantic actually… While I was away I kept up with what The Plastics where up to on their myspace, facebook etc. and grew quite excited when reading all the good press, cd reviews and news of all sponsorship deals and competitions they were winning left right and centre. When I got back we got straight into jamming and I felt right at home in the rehearsal studio with these three down-to-earth guys. After only 2 weeks of practising we were inside Sound and Motion Studios, recording tracks for the upcoming EP. This was due to another sponsorship deal they had landed for themselves while I was abroad. So yeah, I’m super amped and feel really fortunate to be joining such a talented band.

  1. What do you do in the band?

I play guitar and do backup vocals

  1. What are you adding to the band that they didn’t already have?

Second guitar parts, duh!

  1. Have you ever played in a band before?

I used to play guitar for the Rap/Funk/Rock/Pop band, The Allstar Funk Four for about 3 years and before that I played guitar and attempted to sing for my punk band War On Salt (not really worth mentioning, but hey)

  1. What do you outside of being a musician?

I love vegan and vegetarian cooking, chilling with Mary Jane and going to all the beautiful naturist places we have here in Cape Town.

  1. Who are your biggest musical influences?

My influences change daily, but the ones that have stuck are probably Gwen Stefani, Michael Jackson (mainly Jackson 5 stuff), The Bloodhound Gang, Air, Daft Punk and Dr Dre.

  1. Who are you listening to at the moment?

Coldplay, The Ting Tings, Aerosmith, The Plastics, Moloko, The Beatles and Goldfish.

  1. If not The Plastics, what other SA band would you have liked to join? Why?

Max Normal TV. Because they rock. Not sure where I would fit in though… Or maybe Gang of Instrumentals.

  1. When will you begin performing with the band? When and where can we expect to see you on stage for the first time?

My first gig with The Plastics is coming up this weekend (Sat 22nd) at The Assembly. We will be playing with Kidofdoom, Yesterday's Pupil, Jax Panik, and ETC crew – its going to be an awesome show!

  1. What is the next big thing on the music scene in Cape Town?

Finger Clothing (available at the Finger store on Kloof Str)

So, there's Arjun. I think this band has a little way to go (as do all SA bands) but they are headed in the right direction and taking the (or a) right approach. As Arjun said, they are currently recording another EP. Good stuff lads. I reviewed their first EP. Check it!

Again, as Arjun mentioned they are playing this weekend [Saturday] at The Assembly with a host of exciting acts from other parts of SA.

Oh my goodness. I love finding gem short videos on YouTube. I found this one that makes me laugh largely because of the New Zealand accent.

Here is another one with a bizarre twist in the short story.

Gotta love the Chinks...

Enough said.

SIBOT AND SPOEK ARE PLAYDOE

It seems as though it was the weekend of new things. First, folk vibes on Friday and then this hiphop/rap/afro/techno party on Saturday. And wow, what a party. I hadn't seen this kind of show in ages and generally after watching Sweat.X or Max Normal.tv I felt a little dirty on the inside.
[Sibot]
But Spoek and Sibot made sure that no one was left standing still or offended by visual aids. Characteristically, at the beginning of a show everyone is packed in as close as possible so as to get up to the front. This was no different, but as the sweat began to pour, it was not long before people were forced to abandon the their quest to touch Spoek and allow for some space to breath and dance. And dance we did. The set was long, very long and I (being old) had to even sit for a while to get my breath back. But Spoek's energy and lyrics were relentless. The way the pair employ classic 90's techno rap is amazing! It took me back (at times) to Fresh Prince of Bel Air Will Smith. I loved it! Sibot is world renowned for his musical abilities and used what felt like every sound in the industry to give tracks a unique edge.
[Spoek]
What a party. What a night. Even good ol' Gazelle made an appearance to show off his rapping skills alongside Spoek.
[Gazelle]
Check out their Myspace and Facebook page for more info on Playdoe.

Also, look out for a review of their EP which was launched on the same night. It will be up soon. Click here if you haven't seen the video to their single off their EP.

Folk Music - I does it

Over the years folk music in Cape Town has had it's ups and downs but has always existed in a number of smaller venues in Obs and the surrounds. But mainly Obs.

About a week ago The Folk Avant Garde did a gigging tour around Cape Town from The Waiting Room (in Long Street) to Obs to Noordhoek and False Bay to promote a 'folk revival' if you will in Cape Town. Big names (in folk) included (to mention just three); Arlyn, Cabins in the Forest and Miles Sievwright. They enjoyed small but loving crowds around the city's perimeters as their fingers danced like freed prisoners on their guitars (and one or two other instruments).

I went along to Obs Cafe on Friday night to see, above all, Miles Sievwright take the stage. He came on, guitar in hand with a thick overcoat that I knew was a bad idea. It was not long before he was complaining about the heat.
[Miles Sievwright]
Anyway, he played his lyrical tunes and was not shy to push his voice to the limit, which I might add was impressive. With a sound similar at times to that of Iron & Wine and a voice that sometimes could be compared to Michael Buble, he enjoyed much favour with the gathered. (Yes, I said Michael Buble. Don't act like you hav never listened to Michael Buble.) He introduced a song that was warmly met with encouragement and cheers which surprised Miles. He queried, "How do you know this song?" It seems as though he is a little more popular than he thought. Good on ya' Miles!
It was a good evening, I was dead tired though, so left a little earlier than I'd hoped to do.

Watch out for another Avant Garde Tour in the future!

Napoleon Dynamite goes Afrikaans

If you have watched Napoleon Dynamite en 'n bietjie Afrikaans verstaan, you will like this clip. (Flip, my Afrikaans is so bad, I hope my word order was correct there.)

Get Nasty is back!!

There are two types of people in the world. There are people who go to and share stories about Get Nasty parties and there are people who the stories told and wish they had gone! Truth.

And so, if you are in the latter group and want to be in the first group, there is good news for you. If you are part of the first group and want to remain a story teller there is good news for you too. Get Nasty are back with a characteristically out of control party on the evening of the 20th of November, it's a Thursday, the place; LB's (Long Street). Check out the promo vid below and the Facebook invite for more info.

Celebrate the end of academics and the beginning of summer with a ridiculous night.

Katy Perry's Controversies

So how cool is the dress Katy Perry wore to the EMAs! She introduced the Killers song, Human at the awards. Click here to see it in motion. Anyway in response to her song, I Kissed a Girl, a church posted the following sign outside their building. I don't know what they were trying to accomplish, but they were met with a lot of hostility and confusion.
News crews and gay groups had a field day with this. Check the video.

Sometimes church folk make me mad.

Chanel Mobile Art

You know the designer label, Chanel? Well they have a globe trotting art exhibition. Check out these pics. It's pretty futuristic.
[the entrance]
[the outside]
[at night]
[inside the exhibition]

It looks like a spaceship of sorts. It's traveled from Hong Kong to Tokyo to New York where it has just finished up [9 November]. Now it's on it's way to London, Moscow and Paris. I like it. A lot. Click here for more pics and information.

Mystery Jets - Twenty One

Mystery Jets latest album (March 2008) blows my mind. I would describe Twenty One as a buffet table with the most amazing variety of food morsels. Every track is a different taste stirring up a wide range of reactions in your mouth (mostly good). Some of their lyrics are random, and at times you might think you are listening to The Maccabees, but their music is fresh, light and has a touch of the eighties era.
They are definitely one of my favourite bands of 2008 and worth purchasing. According to Wikipedia Mystery Jets reckon they are bringing back the eighties and are going to take over the world. We'll see. But for now enjoy the video for first single off the album called Young Love featuring my favourite female vocalist at the moment, Laura Marling.

Diamonds In The Dark (Dusty Cabinets Mix) - Mystery Jets

The Killers - Human

Human, the name of the first single off The Killers latest piece of work, is certainly not the greatest song they have written, but this performance at the MTV EMA 2008 with special effects etc makes up for it in a big way.

The blocks that the lads are in could just be screens projecting images of them "performing live", but in fact they are just recorded. It's probably not, but it could be.

Don't thank me, thank Luca, he found it, although for some reason he has removed the post.

Kings of Leon - Use Somebody

[I am so glad they cut their hair, well except one, they look terrible here!]

Yes please. One of the most incredible bands on the circuit at the moment, Kings of Leon released Only by the Night in September this year to critical acclaim. This was less than a year after releasing Because of the Times which debuted at #1 in the UK and Ireland.

So without further procrastination, and without beating around a so-called bush, they present to us, for our listening and viewing pleasure, the second single off arguably their best album yet, with a video that shows a snapshot into the everyday life of these jet setting rockstars, who even feel the necessity to pray for whatever it is that rockers pray for, here is Use Somebody. Did you notice how I made the sentence as long as possible so as to create more suspense? I am really good at that king of trickery. Enjoy the video.

Crap. I just realised after my lengthy build up to the video, that they won't let me embed it. Which means for the next little while at least, I cannot put it on my site from Youtube. But don't stress! I will not let you down. I guess you will have to click on this link to see it. Again, enjoy.

What!!?? You missed Sex on Fire?? Click here for the video. Don't get excited, it's not a porno.

Metric - Help I'm Alive

Remember Metric? Fantastic Canadian band with a new wave/indie rock sound widely known for their song Monster Hospital which was wickedly remixed by MSTRKRFT. They have finished recording their new album (name still to be announced) which they will release early next year. I am sure it will not disappoint. I found the new single off their forthcoming album, called Help I'm Alive. Its very cool. You can dowload it. Don't feel bad, it was on their site for a while as a free download.

Here is the video for Monster Hospital.

You might find it disturbing.

Playdoe Launch

Said to be one of the acts to watch, Playdoe consisting of Spoek and Sibot will be launching their EP at the Assembly next weekend.

The Guardian UK had this to say about them, “Its sick. No, no, its stupid fresh Doing for 1981 electro, what the Cool Kids are doing for 1989 hip hop.”

Sibot (you may remember) did the music for the new Adidas flash site. And Spoek is from the highly acclaimed, Sweat.X.

Anyway, thats the Assembly next weekend (15 November). Buy your tickets online, cos they are limited to 350 tickets (for some strange reason), which goes very fast for an act like Playdoe. Here is there video, Pop Like This.

For more details, check out the Facebook event page and have a listen to their music on Myspace.
See you there Cape Town.

Kitsuné Video

So remember the post I did recently on Kitsune Maison 6? They released a promotional video for it. Check it! They speak to all the artists involved in the compilation. There are a lot of guy/girl combos. Seems to be fashionable these days.

The Members, #5: Darren Leader

Next up in our Members Series is Darren (the drummer) from Zebra & Giraffe. You will remember them from when they totally outplayed the Dirty Skirts at the Assembly last month.

  1. What other bands have you played in before and how have they influenced the way you play today?

Literally the first band that I played in worth mentioning was Harris Tweed. I joined them when I was 19, my first year out of school! It was an amazing learning experience, and one that gave me so many great memories too! I learnt about playing as a controlled drummer as all those drum parts were relatively simple, but were very specific. I learnt a lot from Darryl (Torr). But I then went off the band scene for a while. Later I joined Zebra & Giraffe and a band called Voodoo Child simultaneously. The Voodoo Child thing was purely a temporary slot as their drummer had to have an operation. I’m now just part of Z & G.

  1. How long have you been playing drums? How did you get started?

I’ve been playing drums since I was about 8, so 12/13 yrs. I literally can’t even remember “starting” to be honest. I’ve just kind of always played for as long as I can remember, but I started lessons at about 8 yrs old! I grew up playing in church, so that was my first kind of “education” as far as I can remember!

  1. In South Africa it is next to impossible to be a band member for a living. What do you do to supplement your band income?

Ya you’re right! I give drum lessons privately a lot! That’s pretty much my main source of income, which my band income supplements… I also have a few business ventures going with my dad which helps a lot, and do some drumming session work when I can! I’ve always believed that as a muso, in any country actually, but especially here, you need to have multiple sources of income, so if one dries up suddenly, you can still eat!

  1. What are you studying? Where? What do you want to be when you get big?

I hope I never get big! But I’m studying a Bcom, retail management degree. I kind of see it as a side project to the music thing, and if all goes according to plan music-wise, I wont need to use it! We will wait and see I guess…

  1. How does it feel being part of a band like Zebra & Giraffe that seems to have hit almost instant fame in South Africa?

Ya its pretty crazy man. I would be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the “fame” thing although I would like to clarify and say outright that we are nowhere near ‘famous’ at all! Haha… Fame is an extremely fickle thing! It’s amusing to me that before you get onto stage and people don’t know that you play in a band, they wont look twice at you (especially girls actually!), but as soon as you walk off stage after playing they suddenly wanna talk or get you to sign something even though I’m the same person as I was when I walked on stage 45 minutes ago you know? It’s pretty funny actually. But ya, it’s cool to be part of something getting a bit off attention!

  1. What is your best Z&G gigging memory? And most embarrassing?

Ah wow, it’s really early to say man… I think this like only our 2nd or 3rd month of gigging, so we haven’t had much time to rack up embarrassing experiences yet, but I guess it would be on studio 1, live on tv, and in the second chorus of ‘the knife’, like the biggest part of our biggest song, and I dropped my stick! Haha… All the power just vaporised! Oh well it wasn’t too bad! My best gigging memory so far would probably be our show at The Assembly in Cape Town with the Dirty Skirts recently! Or our big show at the Alexander Theatre in Joburg to start off our tour. Both great crowds and such good energy… We can’t ask for more!

  1. Who are your heroes?

Um… Probably my parents just cause they are super supportive of my musical career, and just such great people. Definitely my grandfather too.. Just an amazing and wise guy.

  1. Biggest influences? Why them?

Influences musically would definitely be Neill Ettridge and Andre Luke my drum teachers. I also have a lot of drummer friends like Matt Marinus (who actually played drums on the Z & G album), and Dave Nilsson. Then guys from church like Raymond Green, and other guys I’ve played with for a long time!

  1. What are you listening to mostly these days?

Wow that’s a hard one! I listen to a lot of strange music actually!! I love jazz, so I listen to a lot of that like Pat Metheny, Christian Mcbride band, Mike Stern etc. and a lot of fusion stuff! At the moment, band wise, which I guess you’re more interested in, I’m loving the new Kings Of Leon (as is everybody), I love Mutemath, Bloc Party, Death Cab, Damien Rice, anything with Dallas Green (Alexisonfire, or City in Colour), Circa Survive and some old school stuff like Tower of Power and Earth, Wind and Fire. A whole lot more, but that’s enough for now!

  1. Who would you say is the most exciting South African band to keep an eye on in the next year or so?

Gee… The S.A. music industry has just improved so much in the last while that there are actually quite a few, but I think Fokofpolisiekar, with their new album is gonna be popular. I’m also so excited for everyone to hear the new Harris Tweed (Dear Reader) album! The new material is really different, but every aspect is great! I have so much respect for that band!

  1. What is your favourite thing to do when not playing drums?

I’m a homebody man… I like being at home and comfortable. I also have a close group of friends that I hang out a lot with when I’m not away. Mostly chilled out stuff like movies or just a good old braai is on my list of cool things to do! I’m also addicted to the t.v. show Scrubs! I have pretty much all the dvd’s and so I watch a lot of that in spare time. I also practice a lot drum-wise when I have off time. It’s therapy!

  1. Where do you see yourself in five years time?

I Have no idea which is one of the reasons why I love being in the music industry. I hope to be a lot more involved in the session scene. That’s my passion and my ultimate goal (to make a career out of playing music). I also hope to be finished my degree and I hope to continue growing some business ventures as that interests me, and just continuing to do what I wanna do! Never settling into something that bores me or taking the ‘safe’ option u know?

  1. Anything you would like to add?

Um… I must say I’m impressed with the way that the scene is growing and how people have started to really support the local music scene, but I just hope that people are supporting it because they really like the music and not just because its local you know? I think some artists try guilt people into supporting their music just because it’s local. Supporting mediocre music breeds mediocrity, so I just hope that people continue to support the music but for the right reasons! Oh and I need to find a girlfriend, so please mail suggestions to Richard!! Any help is greatly appreciated! Haha… Only joking! Cheers man.

He really does want a girl friend. Send me pics. :)

Catch Zebra & Giraffe in Cape Town twice this month!!! First at Ratanga for the Hands up Summer Festival (8 November) where they will be playing with the Skirts (again) and then (my highlight) at Kirstenbosch on 23 November for the Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts! Check it!

Maxnormal.tv is no more!!!

(He looks too old to be rapping)
I was pretty happy to read this on the Maxnormal.tv FB group just now. Not because I am heartless, it's just now my vibe. I guess they were really good at what they did though.

"To My Dearest Friends

Max Normal speaking.

I have something very important to tell you all.

MaxNormal.TV is no more.
This fantastic pop-art experiment has been very dear to me.
The love and support you have all shown this project has made it a very precious experience for us all.
